You don’t know, till you know
No matter what people tell you about parenthood, you’ll never fully understand until you’re put in that place. It can be both the greatest and hardest thing you will experience. In this age of social media, it is so easy to fall into the illusion that motherhood is just pure blissful. On social media, people are Pinterest moms, Instagram moms, or mother of the year. As if they got it all figured.
Be honest, and communicate
It is very critical to be very honest with yourself and what you feel and have a strong support system from your partner, your family, friends, and people you trust. Otherwise, you will find yourself comparing your motherhood journey to others which leads to frustration and post-partum depression.
Ask for help. Mothers feel like they should have this gene inside of them that automatically makes them mother and that they should just be able to do handle it. Yes, it is true that you’ll figure things out over time but you are encourage to acknowledge that it is hard and seek for help from your partner, family, and friends!
It is without argument that women carry the bulk of pregnancy and parenthood. With all the body changes, emotional rollercoaster, change of priorities, primary child caretaker. However, do not dispel the fact that your partners are freaked out too. So it is important to be honest with them. Say what you feel. Say what you need. They’re also navigating the perils and pitfalls as well as the pleasures of becoming a parent & a father. Perhaps, it could be easier if you figure them out together.
You are important too (and pick your tribe)
Raising children is hard, and any parent who says differently is lying. Parenting is emotionally and intellectually draining. Yes, baby is a blessing, but you know, you are also a blessing. Don’t forget to remind yourself that you are as important. You’re still human being. Don’t lose your own identity. Still pursue your interests. Make yourself a priority daily. Don’t allow parenthood to be an excuse for you to put yourself aside. And be sure to surround yourself with a tribe of people who lift you up, rather than make you feel less then.
But at the end of the day, every trial, challenge, painful realities of pregnancy and motherhood are worth it. Children are an essential source of happiness and life is more beautiful and meaningful because of them.
