Anyone wanna chat about vaginas and sexual health?
Who said we can’t feel sexy after kids? Let’s drop all the stigma related to our sexual feelings and realize as women, we have a right to have fun and feel sexy with our partner even after we’ve brought children into this world. Better yet, after we’ve passed 40 years of age!
In this episode of Happy Hour Podcast, our guest Elaine Kopinga talks about vaginal health and women’s sexual health in general. Elaine Kopinga specializes in Urogynecology and Prenatal postpartum care. She has an extensive experience working with women in all stages of life as a nurse practitioner and certified nurse midwife.
Understanding what happens during and after childbirth
Elaine has a deep understanding of the challenges women face after childbirth. This is what drives her to focus on combining women’s health with aesthetic medicine. She aims to address the changing needs of women throughout their lives, particularly with regard to changes in pelvic floor conditions and overall vagina health. She truly believes that true healing begins from the inside out towards spiritual and physical wellness.
She has worked at big teaching hospitals, residents delivering babies, and she’s worked with women with pelvic floor, pelvic health, and sexual health issues. And through that exposure, she realizes that as women go through the lifecycle of reproductive life, from the onset of puberty, all the way through menopause, every cycle has different needs. And she wants to help address the needs and concerns that women have as she is going through the same cycle as a woman and a mother herself.
Where does sexual health really reside within us?
When talking about sexual health, the number one thing that she tells her patients is so much sex is up in your head. If you are not mentally and emotionally 100% with it, you’re going to have a tough time achieving that physical response that you want. And once you can get to a place where you are feeling good about yourself, you’re feeling good about the partner that you’re with, you’re feeling in that right space, a lot of things will follow. So absolutely, emotion is so important.
Easier than ever to get help today
One of the things she is trying to launch is to offer an online presence for women. And because of the pandemic, medicine has now fast forwarded. The experience as to trying to get telemedicine off the ground with the medical world. It’s also important for women to realize that if their provider is not addressing their needs, well then find a new one. Find someone who’s going to listen to you.
This is a good information for someone who has been hearing horror stories about how sexual drive deteriorates over time. Now that there are resources, you know that it’s not abnormal and there are things that can be done and resources you can access to help you address your vaginal, sexual, pelvic health issues.
What happens in our bodies chemically
For mothers who are breastfeeding, your body suppresses estrogen naturally so that your body can make the breast milk. For a lot of women, they experienced that vaginal dryness and that decreased libido, and that leads to poor sex life. Also, there’s this thought that as we age, we don’t want to have sex. We just assume that we’re just too lazy or tired or whatever may be the case not realizing that there’s an actual chemical component to why we don’t have that libido anymore.
Women need to speak to their providers because they can get them local estrogen that will lubricate the vagina to make it enjoyable for them and be intimate with their partners. Make sure that the providers are addressing the needs.
Look for a practitioner who practices more in functional medicine or holistic medicine or even a nurse practitioner or midwife, because they have a more of that holistic background. They are willing to look at your labs for me a different angle. They look at your vitamin D, they look at your T3, and the level of your testosterone.
So many women are so conscious about their vaginas. The reality is vaginas all look different. They’re meant to look different. They will look different before and after you have children. As a woman, we need to love our vaginas, and we need to be proud of our vaginas. And once you are comfortable with your vagina that’s when your sexuality just blossoms.
