Alright, friends, let’s get real. You know I’m all about mindful living, balance, and tuning in to what feels good in our bodies—not just jumping on the latest health trend because everyone else is doing it. But I was gearing up for my first half marathon (more on that next week), and I thought, why not take things up a notch?
So, for the entire month of January, I said goodbye to sugar and alcohol. Yup—no tequila, no desserts, no sneaky little bites of chocolate (which, let’s be honest, sometimes feel NECESSARY). I also committed to eating only whole, real foods and focusing on high-protein meals to fuel my body properly.
I expected to feel like a whole new woman—lighter, clearer, more energized. I imagined waking up every morning feeling like a million bucks, running faster than ever, glowing like a goddess. But here’s the kicker…
I Actually Didn’t Feel Any Different.
Yep, you read that right.
I didn’t wake up feeling like a superhero. I didn’t magically drop weight (I didn’t drop any weight at all actually). I didn’t feel this insane burst of energy that people rave about when they cut out sugar and alcohol. And honestly? I was just as surprised as you might be.
Why Didn’t I See Big Changes?
I have a few theories…
- I Already Had a Strong Health Foundation: I eat 60-70% clean on a regular basis. My meals are mostly whole foods, lots of protein, and nutrient-dense. I do enjoy my quality tequila (because priorities), but I don’t overdo it. So, this wasn’t a massive shift for me—more like fine-tuning what was already working.
- I’m Consistently Active: For months, I’ve been training hard—running, strength training, yoga, and daily movement. Plus, I spend time in my sauna 4-6 days a week, which helps with detox and recovery. My body wasn’t suddenly shocked by a “new routine”—it was already in a good rhythm.
- I Take My Minerals & Supplements Seriously: I prioritize high-quality minerals and supplements every day, making sure my body is getting what it needs. Maybe my energy levels didn’t shift drastically because they were already optimized?
So, was this whole experiment a waste of time? Absolutely not.
What I Learned From This Experience
- It Reinforced That My Body is Unique
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to health. What works for one person might not be a game-changer for someone else. This is something I teach at my retreats too. - I Enjoy My Lifestyle as It Is
I actually love my normal balance of mindful eating, movement, and yes—a little tequila when I want it. Restriction isn’t necessary when you already have a solid foundation. - It’s All About Listening to Your Own Body
If this journey taught me anything, it’s that our bodies are always talking to us—we just have to listen. I didn’t feel a massive change, but someone else might. And that’s okay. The key is finding what works for YOU.
How You Can Optimize Your Health (Without Overhauling Your Life)
If you’re looking to feel your best, here’s what I recommend—not as a doctor, but as someone who’s spent years tuning into what feels good:
- Focus on real, whole foods – Nourish your body with clean, nutrient-dense meals that support your energy and wellness.
- Move daily – Whether it’s yoga, weight training, or walking, movement is medicine. Find what makes you feel strong and happy.
- Hydrate & replenish minerals – Water alone isn’t enough—make sure you’re getting the right minerals to support hydration and recovery.
- Prioritize recovery – Saunas, stretching, breathwork, and quality sleep make a huge difference in how you feel day to day.
- Give yourself grace – You don’t have to be perfect. Health isn’t about deprivation; it’s about sustainability and joy.
Final Thoughts: Was It Worth It?
Absolutely. Even though I didn’t see major changes, I loved giving myself the space to experiment, be intentional, and continue learning what feels good for my body. Every experience teaches us something.
And if you’re feeling the nudge to reset, recharge, and get in tune with YOUR body, a retreat is the perfect place to do just that. No pressure, no extremes—just a space to listen, feel, and reconnect with what your body truly needs.
So, what’s one small shift you’re curious to try? Let me know—I’d love to hear your thoughts!
With love & balance,
Shannon
