Hey babes! This week we’re talking about sound baths, what it is, how it works and how it benefits you. TBH, I’m a big fan of this mediative experience and frequently incorporate it in our yoga retreats. I’ve seen it transform the energy of my retreat guests and clients after just one session. Ok, ok, enough blabbing, let’s immerse ourselves in the wonderful world of sound baths.
What is a Sound Bath?
A sound bath is an intense, mediative, listening experience where different types of percussion instruments, most often crystal singing bowls, are played. During the sessions musical waves generated by the instruments create positive energy that heals your mind and body. This sacred practice is an intense sensory immersive experience that is both therapeutic and restorative.
Now, I know a few of you are probably rolling your eyes, but I can assure you, it works! In fact, there are studies on its effectiveness as a meditation tool that alleviates stress, tension and enhances wellness.
How Do Sound Baths Work?
Ideally, sound baths take place in a quiet, comfortable space conducive to meditation. It can take place in a group setting or done individually. Although the name suggests a bath, I promise there are no naked people (ermm…unless you’re into that????) or swimsuits required.
A sound healer, the person who plays the instruments, will setup ahead of the sound therapy session. Yoga mats or other comfortable blankets are unfurled and participants (again, CLOTHED!) on entering the space will follow the instructor’s commands to initiate the meditation session. The experience typically last between 40 to 90 minutes.
How Do Sound Baths Benefit the Mind & Body?
As mentioned earlier, quite a few studies show, that sound bath therapy can help alleviate mood-related challenges. Here are some other benefits:
- It decreases tension, anger, and anxiety in your body by lowering the heart rate.
- As a meditation tool, it can assist with managing depression. Time in the session can be used to practice mindfulness and affirmations.
- It’s relaxing (yes, as simple as it sounds, studies we should relax more in our daily lives)
- It creates positive energy that washes over the body to heal and restore the mind and body.
Can Anyone Participate in a Sound Bath Session?
For the most part, most persons can participate in sound bath sessions. It works especially well for those who are open or comfortable practicing meditation. Remember, it is a form of musical therapy, so, it can be utilized in different settings by experienced sound healers, therapists, and persons who practice guided meditation.
However, there is a very small group of people who may have an adverse experience. This includes:
- Persons who are overstimulated by sound
- Individuals with migraines easily triggered by intense noise
- Hearing aid wearers, as the reverberating sound may be uncomfortable
However, in one-on-one sessions, special calibrations can be made to create a more personalized experience for most to enjoy.
Where Can I Find Sound Baths?
That’s easy, at The Retreat Ranch (no bias here, hehehe) or anywhere you find suitable for meditation. I mean there are even sound bath meditations available for free on YouTube! However, and this is a big however, the best experience can be found in a space conducive for the sounds’ vibrations to flow over your body in a physically immersive setting.
See? There’s nothing too scarypants about participating in a sound bath therapy. In fact, I try to a lot time for at least one session during my yoga retreats.
Until next week!
XOXO Shannon
