A different way to view anger
This episode of Happy Hour Podcast talks about anger and how it is manifested, how it can manifest in the body, and then just a different way to look at it. We also talk about how we normally resist anger, especially things that we hear – we are told “you can’t feel angry…You shouldn’t feel or be angry”….especially as women.
Different Approaches to Anger
- One of the things that is known in the medical industry is the angrier you are, and the more constant that is, it becomes detrimental to your health. Anger is really bad for your body as it pumps out all the ‘yucky’ chemicals in our body that negatively affects our organs, especially our heart.
- Anger is an emotion and we need to experience and accept it. The more we’re fighting it, the longer the anger lingers.
Anger is the surface feeling that is being expressed. But most of the time, it’s almost always something else. It’s almost always fear. It’s almost always stress. It’s almost always ‘being offended’. You know, it’s almost always masking something else. Sometimes, it’s even passion and it comes out as anger.
Channeling Anger in a Different Way
- If we take a moment to be appreciative of the anger, it will lose that negative health impact, and it will more become a tool. It’s just a tool in your arsenal of who you are of your personality.
- Sometimes, if we want to force it out, or get rid of that anger or look at it as a bad part of us, then that’s how we carry it around. And that’s the part that affects us negatively. That’s the part that affects our health negatively.
- There will be times that you need to express that anger and be upset, otherwise people are going to walk all over you. You don’t want people to disrespect you and sometimes expressing anger is the only way to be heard in the right way. It’s about channeling it in a way that you stand up for yourself but not allow that anger to hurt or destroy you.
- Even the calmest person can be angry because that’s part of being human. But having the ability to figure out the reason why you’re angry is a big one because it’ll help you when these things come up again.
- Anger can also be a manifestation of a similar experience in the past that is triggering you and you are just taking it out with someone. It is helpful to take a deep breath and just share that with whomever you’re talking with, in a way that makes sense.
Linking Anger with Childhood
In our childhood, we’re being taught that being angry is wrong. If you feel angry about something, you have to kind of suppress that. Maybe the better option is to acknowledge the anger and address it instead of brushing it off and try not to feel it. It’s amazing how kids are already figuring out that there’s things that don’t line up to what they expect or hoping for. And so it stresses them out.
How ‘Undealt With’ Anger affects our Health
If we are carrying an unexpressed or undealt anger, it can manifest in the body as pain or tension or discomfort.
When we experience some sort of negative stress in our life, our body stores that somewhere. And if we don’t express, review, or release it in some way, then it will stay there. And then it becomes something else, it becomes disease in the body or tension,
Sometimes pain in our body is also an indicator that we are not dealing with the emotional stress that we’re carrying in anger. Anger is one of those big ones that does that to us. If you don’t have a medical reason for the pain that you’re experiencing, there’s a very good likelihood that it’s stemming from emotional stress or trauma.
