5 Morning Mood Boosters
The morning, even in quarantine, is the catalyst to your day. Most often how you start your morning will determine how the rest of your day will flow.
I used to not be a morning person. The nights were my jam. However once I made a concerted effort to do some specific things in my routine, mornings became my favorite time of the day- which is good as that is when there is the most energetic potential.
Here are 5 morning mood boosters to help kick start your day in a powerful way!
- Pick a time to get up that gives you, YOU TIME. If your daily ‘chores’ or activities start around 7am, be sure to get up by at least 6:15am so that you don’t have any pulls on you. If you get up right before the kids do, or right when you need to get ready to leave/start you will feel rushed and ‘behind’. This can ricochet into the rest of your day.
- Don’t check your phone/email/social media until after YOU time. That extra 45+ minutes that you are giving yourself is just that- time dedicated to YOU. Not to you responding to someone else. By allowing yourself to get your mind, energy and alignment right before anything else, it is easier to handle whatever may be in your email/social media/etc.
- Drink water, a lot of it. Right when you wake up drink at least 8 ounces of water. More if you can. Kick start your body and internal organs by hydrating. This is crucial to getting your brain and internal goodies to wake up and get ready.
- Stretch/walk/exercise. I am not going to tell you to do some crazy workout each day to get you going. But some sort of intentional movement is critical. Whether it is a 15 minute power stretch, or 15 minute spin class, or 15 minutes of weight lifting- just 15 minutes can get your muscles and brain fired up. If you have time, add more or do more than one (yoga and spin).
- Read/pray/meditate/journal. Spend some time in reflection, prayer, journaling, meditation or self development. What is your self-love language? Whatever feels good to you, do that for at least 15 minutes.
This is how my mornings look (even during quarantine because routine is critical):
- Wake up 1 hour before kids need to be up (yep, kids have a time to get up even during quarantine) and spend at least 3-4 minutes breathing and reflecting on things I am grateful for. I do this while I am still in bed.
- Drink a full glass of water and take my morning supplements.
- 10 minutes of spin on my Peloton bike and 10 minutes of yoga followed by 15 minutes in my infrared sauna.
- A cold shower. While in the shower I listen to one of my favorite podcasts on my shower speaker.
- After I get ready I read/pray/meditate.
I have fallen out of my routine a few times. And when that happens I can feel the difference (so can my family- if you know what I mean). I have learned that staying in routine is what works for me.
It is important to note that one reason this also works well for me is because of my nighttime routine- where I outline what I plan to accomplish the next day.
Otherwise your morning might be filled with you worrying about what is on your agenda and your mind straying to things that keep popping up on your mental to-do list.
Stay tuned for my nighttime routine.
I am curious…what works for you in the mornings?
